Mosaic Triangle Band Members
Lynda Murray
Band leader, saxophonist/composer has been living in Hastings since 1986. Previously she had been living in London and worked with the first ever London Community Music project set up by
John Stevens (drummer) and John Cummings (Serious). Initially it was called Search and Reflect.
Since the 90's she has played in many Hastings music venues. One of the most memorable gigs was about 20 years ago when her quartet with Paul Whitten (db), Luke Rattenbury (gtr) and the late Dave Trigwell (drms) played the opening set for Courtney Pine at the De La Warr Pavilion. She also played in the popular Jazz Breakfast series when St Mary in the Castle was reopened as a concert venue.
Feeling motivated and inspired during the early 2000's Lynda set up two jazz clubs The Street and Hastings Jazz Club, both of which received financial awards. Lynda also received funding to run free jazz workshops for young people who lived in the area. Some of these workshops culminated in performances with a professional jazz combo in the Studio space at The White Rock Theatre Hastings.
In 1999 Lynda was commissioned by Penny Precious (Hastings Arts Officer) to write a piece of music for the first ever Coastal Currents event. Along with John Donaldson (pno) and Nigel Thomas (db) they performed the composition Seascapes in the foyer of St Mary in the Castle.
Lynda played in the first St Leonards Festival, and played in Hasting’s first Seafood and Wine Festival. The budget that she was given allowed her to bring Carol Grimes (vocals) and Steve Lodder (keys) from London to perform with her, Paul Whitten (db) and the late Dave Trigwell (drums).
On a very cold July evening in 2017 her quartet which included Terry Seabrook (keys) Nigel Thomas (db) and Milo Fell (drums) were warmly received at the Stade Open Stage by about 100 people who sat in deckchairs huddled underneath blankets to keep warm and hear her wonderful sound and amazing band play. Lynda plays mainly modern jazz, and her own compositions. Her playing and compositions are inspired and influenced by the playing of Chris Potter, Michael Brecker, Cannonball Adderly, John Coltrane and Lee Konitz.
Paul Whitten
Lynda says it’s wonderful to be working with Paul again, notably "the best jazz bassist in the South of England" say promoters of the Swanage Jazz Festival. I can only agree. He is the best bass player that I have worked with and I am so pleased to announce that he is a permanent member of Mosaic Triangle. We have played together on and off for more than 20 years.
In his early years as a professional musician Paul’s bass playing took him around the world and the most memorable time for him was in Paris regularly playing in Chet Baker’s quartet.
Paul is a sideman in many Brighton jazz ensembles and has worked on many successful projects, Terry Seabrook's Milestones, a group that celebrates the music of Miles Davis.
He is also a member of the Adrian York Trio who tour a project called "Celebrating Bill Evans".
He regularly works with Lawrence Jones (sax/fl) Chris Coull (tpt) and Roy Hilton (pno).
In the 70’s Paul was a double bass major at the Guildhall School of Music and most notable for him studied jazz harmony with Lionel Grigson.
Yair Katz
Yair is the third permanent member of Mosaic Triangle and Lynda has been playing with him for about two years.
He is a registered music therapist and a multi instrumentalist. As a drummer/percussionist/vocalist he contributed to over 40 albums in New Zealand and the UK, and performed in international festivals in NZ and Australia, including several WOMAD festivals. Yair brings world music influences and a love of improvisation and musical experimentation to his many mixed-genre collaborations.
In 2024 he released an album of songs sung both in Hebrew (his mother’s tongue) and English and he currently works on the follow up. Yair performs locally on a regular basis, with Column258, Afrit Nebula and solo.
